Why Recovery After a Running Event Is Important

Tips for recovery after a running event.

Recovering is a vital part of reducing injury and improving performance – recovering not just from big events, but from every run.

Here are a few tips for immediately post running to ensure you’re recovering optimally;

  1. Warm down – finish your run/event with some gentle jogging and slowing down gradually, rather than immediately stopping. Even a few minutes of work can help reduce soreness.
  2. Nutrition – make sure you rehydrate with water, or a recovery drink. Ensuring you supply your body with Carbohydrates and Protein post training can ensure your muscles recover optimally.
  3. Soft Tissue Work – spend a few minutes gently stretching your lower limb, focus on the Quadriceps, Glutes, Hamstrings and calves.
  4. Sleep – probably the most important of them all, during sleep the hormones involved in repairing and adapting muscle are released – so the more sleep the better!

Keep an eye on your physical status and know that we can stretch our bodies in different ways during events. Recovery may be quick, or slower for some people.
