Sprains, strains and fractures

Sprains, Strains and Fractures

A Sprain can occur at any time, perhaps you have stepped awkwardly on uneven ground or rolled an ankle, a wrist can easily be sprained by falling onto an outstretched hand or during sporting activities such as cycling or lifting.

The correct and effective post injury treatment of a sprain can significantly decrease the likelihood of a re-injury, this is particularly vital when you consider the probability of suffering a recurrent or similar injury can be as high as 60%.

A sprain can be extremely painful and in the first instance straightforward PRICE management should be administered as soon as possible. We however always advise the immediate assessment of an injury by a healthcare professional whose experience and knowledge will ensure that your injury receives the correct management and that more complex injuries are not overlooked. Thorough assessment and diagnosis will identify the type of sprain before commencing treatment.

Treatment is initially aimed at controlling pain and reducing inflammation in order to regain a full range of motion and restore normal movement. Further rehabilitation is then recommended to ensure that all aspects of strength, balance, coordination and function are restored as this will allow return to sport and reduce the probability of recurrence.

A Muscle Strain is caused when a muscle is pulled beyond its normal capacity and there are a number of highly effective treatments that we can offer to relieve pain.

PRICE management can once again be used immediately following the injury as this reduces pain and swelling. A thorough assessment by a health professional will help identify the extent of any injury and therefore the optimum management.

Once we have fully assessed your injury we begin a programme designed to treat the injury and return you to health as efficiently as possible. You will be provided a series of stretching and motion exercises designed to improve mobility and we also look to strengthen muscles, identifying weaknesses and advising exercises to help reduce the risk of a similar injury.

A fracture can be extremely painful at any age and whether you have sustained your injury as a result of a fall, accident or sporting incident the correct treatment is vital to restoring mobility, strength and confidence.

There are many treatment options open to us and following a thorough assessment, working with your primary carers, consultant or GP we will begin a programme designed to relieve pain and restore function as quickly as possible. Longer term aims will be to return you to health and discuss ways to prevent recurrence of the incident that lead to your injury.

PRICE is an acronym comprising the 5 elements of the early treatment of soft tissue injuries Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation and can be highly effective at reducing the impact of an injury. We however always advise the immediate assessment of an injury by a healthcare professional who’s experience and knowledge will ensure that your injury receives the correct management and that more complex injuries are not overlooked.

I can't thank you enough for all your help. You've been awesome - not only have I been able to play successfully whilst injured but I have been improving every day! Thanks for getting to the cause of the problem so that I can work on it through the season. You’re a legend!

Doing sports training I have used a number of physios including an Olympic level specialist, and Camilla McQuade stands head and shoulders above all of them. I trust her advice completely and would travel almost any distance for an appointment with her.

I’m still in one piece after the Windsor Half Marathon. Glutes and hamstring held up well and I was able to finish pretty strong – your exercises have definitely helped – thanks James!

I did it! I completed the Farnham marathon! Amazingly my leg held out and did not give me a problem which must be down to no road running for a month and James Avery my physio at Bevan Wilson.
